[Interview] Warbringer

Voici une interview de Warbringer que j'ai réalisée il y a quelques jours. C'est John Laux, le guitariste qui y a répondu. Il y a d'abord la version originale en anglais et puis la version française, traduite par Spoon. Je vous souhaite une bonne lecture, et n'hésitez en aucun cas à commenter.

Well to begin, why not just introduce your band with your words?

John: Warbringer is a thrash metal band from L.A., California. In the last 3 years we have been touring the globe non-stop with bands like Exodus, Megadeth, Kreator,
Obituary, Overkill, Nile, Testament, Vader, Napalm Death, Suffocation and so on. Right now we're still touring on our album "Waking into Nightmares" released last year. With Warbringer we all strive to write brutal, original, and exciting thrash metal. We do not want to rehash and copy the sounds of the '80s
.
Thank you. Can you tell us what is exactly Thrash Metal for you guys?

John: For me, the thrash metal I've been into has always been borderline death metal. I think it's a great style of music for a live atmosphere because it has the reckless wild energy of a punk band and at the same time it has to be technical, precise, and well-executed. Roller coaster tempos, riffs, catchy hooks and killer solos are all a part of what makes a good thrash band such a great experience.

What is the Thrash Metal band who inspired Warbringer the most, and why this band?

John: Well to be honest, I could never settle with just one band. Here are 3 bands that have really inspired our band when we were starting.
Megadeth - Personally when I was young, "Tornado of Souls" was the song I sold my soul for. Dave Mustaine is an excellent songwriter. This band started the metal avalanche for me.
Kreator - One of the first really evil brutal bands I heard. I had "Pleasure to Kill" in my cd player in high school and I lost it when I first heard it. They are a great example of how a thrash band should be able to grow musically without compromising their sound as they grow. My case and point being the masterpiece, "Coma of Souls." I think I'll always be more partial to this style of thrash than the Master of Puppets kind of approach.
Demolition Hammer - I remember when I thought Dark Angel was the heaviest thrash band ever... The first 2 Demolition Hammer albums are absolutely CRUSHING. This band, like so many other bands towards the end during the early 90's, were just getting started and were totally pushing thrash in new directions and just got lost in fray. Timeless Death/Thrash.

It seems that the success came really fast for Warbringer, how do you live that?

John: "Playing in a rock band is just an excuse so you don't have get a day job."
I'm proud of the band because I believe we have earned a fair enough amount of respect from our fans and people who aren't even interested in our music. We did get a very lucky and quick jump start into the industry thanks to some very good people from our Label, Booking Agents, and from our Manager. You really couldn't say we're very "successful" however as we always owe money to someone and we don't come home with anything. I think a reason we have stay out on the road so long every year is because it's the only way to we can afford to live now.

What can you tell us about your last album "Waking Into Nightmares" that was out in may 2009? What about to compare it with the previous ones?

John: I almost consider "Waking into Nightmares" to be our first real album. I only say this because this is the first album we did after a year of touring and real experience as a band. We also had a much better idea of how to work in a studio to get the sounds and record we wanted. We were really fortunate to work with Gary Holt as a producer. He taught us a lot that we're going to take into account for the next record. We had only 2 months to write the music and only 12 days to record "Waking into Nightmares" compared to the years as a garage band and 2 months (on/off) we spent recording the first album.

Anything to say about your next record? Did you already worked on it?

John: Not yet, we tour so much that we never have any time to rehearse or even practice personally or as a band. We do spend a lot time writing riffs, talking about song ideas, and programing music into our computers. We're aiming to take the last half of the year off to give the music for the 3rd album time to grow. We don't want to rush like we had to for the 2nd album so we'll spend almost 6 months writing and then record it early next year for a hopeful summer 2011 release.

Can we expect to see Warbringer doing a lot of european festivals this summer? Festivals like Graspop, Summer Breeze, Hellfest...

John: Last year we played Grasspop, With Full Force, and number of other great festivals. This year we have Headbangers Open Air and Obscene Extreme confirmed so we'll be back in Europe for our third striaght summer but we're not getting a lot of other confirmations. We're trying to get more and there are several we haven't played yet that we'd like to like this year or sometime in the future like Hellfest, Bang Your Head, Party-San, Summer Breeze, Bloodstock, Gods of Metal, Download, Rock Hard, etc.

What should you guys say to the people who are reading this interview to make them moving their ass to your upcoming shows?

John: Move your ass down there with a few buddies, Drink some sweet liquor, mosh and go nuts! We always have a great time with the bands we tour with and give the crowd our best whether we're playing for 50 or 2,000 people.

Any funny anecdote, any funny story about your life on the road that you can share with us?

John: There's this story about a Finnish kid I met in San Diego that always sticks out.
This kid told me he was gonna see us in Mexico the next day and he was so drunk I didn't believe it until I see him pull up to a sketchy club in a taxi the next day in Mexico. So we played the gig with Overkill and I think he went through 6 rounds of tequila shots or something because the next thing I knew he was lying down in the dirt and pavement in the parking lot. After some arguing we agreed to let him sleep passed out in our van because he seemed too wiped out to even puke. We took his passport out so we could take him over the border. So pretty much 4 hours later we're right on the edge of the border, the guards are walking over to us and the kid bolts up, someone opens the door thinking he's gonna puke, and it was just a knee-jerk dead fish reaction because he just fell out the car door and hit his head on a iron rail. As soon as the Guard and the band rush out to check out the scene he was bleeding all over the cement. We made sure he got taken to an American Hospital, and we got an email a week later from him saying he had a great time.

Pour commencer, pourquoi ne pas vous présenter avec vos propres mots ?

John: Warbringer est un groupe de thrash métal de Los Angeles (Californie). Durant ces 3 dernières années nous avons joué non-stop dans le monde entier avec Exodus, Megadeth, Kreator, Orbituary, Overkill, Nile, Testament, Vader, Napalm Death, Suffocation… Encore aujourd’hui nous sommes toujours en tournée pour la promo de « Waking into Nightmares » sorti l’année dernière. Avec Warbringer nous nous efforçons à écrire du thrash à la fois brutal, original et stimulant. Nous ne voulons pas ressortir et copier le thrash des années 80.

Merci. Pouvez-vous nous dire ce qu’est-ce exactement le Thrash Metal pour vous ?

John: Pour moi, le thrash metal que j’ai connu a toujours été proche du death metal. Je pense que c’est un grand style de musique avec une atmosphère vivante parce qu’elle a l’énergie sauvage et téméraire d’un groupe de punk avec à la fois la technique, la précision et la perfection. Des riffs et des tempos novateurs, des accords accrocheurs et des solos de tueurs, tout ce qui peut faire partie d’un bon groupe de thrash ayant de l’expérience.

De quel groupe de thrash metal, et pourquoi, s’est inspiré le plus Warbringer ?

John: Pour être honnête, je ne pourrai citer un seul groupe. Il y a bien 3 groupes sur lesquels nous nous sommes inspirés à nos débuts.
Megadeth : Personnellement, quand j’étais jeune « Tornado of Souls » était la chanson sur laquelle j’ai vendu mon âme. Dave Mustaine est un excellent compositeur. Ce groupe m’a déclenché la folie du metal.
Kreator : Un des premiers putain de groupe brutal que j’ai entendu. J’avais « Pleasure to Kill » dans mon lecteur CD au lycée et je l’ai perdu après la première écoute. Ils sont un grand exemple sur comment un groupe de thrash doit évoluer musicalement sans compromettre leur son. Pour moi leur chef d’œuvre est « Coma of Souls ». Je pense que j’aurai toujours un faible pour ce style de thrash plutôt que celui de « Master of Puppets ».
Demolition Hammer : Je me souviens quand je pensais que Dark Angel était le groupe de thrash le plus bourrin… Les deux premiers albums de Demolition Hammer sont absolument GENIAUX. Ce groupe, comme tant de groupes qui s’essoufflaient au début des années 1990, venait juste de commencer et jouait d’un thrash qui allait vers de nouveaux horizons sans jamais se fatiguer. Du Death/Thrash intemporel.

Il semblerait que le success soit vite arrive pour Warbringer. Comment le vivez-vous ?

John: « Jouer dans un groupe de rock est juste une excuse pour ne pas avoir de boulot »
Je suis fier du groupe parce que je crois que nous avons gagné une estime assez importante venant de nos fans et de gens qui ne sont pas vraiment intéressé par notre musique. Nous avons eu beaucoup de chance et que l’on rapidement plongé dans l’industrie. Merci a certaines personnes de notre label, nos agents de spectacle et notre manager. Nous ne pouvons dire que nous sommes « couronné de succès » cependant nous devons toujours de l’argent à quelqu’un et nous ne rentrons pas à la maison avec tout ce que nous gagnons. Je pense que la seule raison qui fait que nous restons aussi longtemps sur la route est que c’est la seule façon qui nous permet de vivre maintenant.

Que pouvez-vous nous dire à propos de votre dernier album “Waking into Nightmares” paru en Mai 2009 ? Que dire de lui par rapport aux précédents albums ?

John: Je considère beaucoup « Waking into Nightmare » comme notre premier vrai album. Je dis uniquement cela parce que c’est le premier album que nous avons fait après un an de tournée et de réelle expérience en tant que groupe. Nous avions aussi une bien meilleure approche sur comment travailler en studio, avoir un son parfait et enregistrer ce que nous voulions. Nous avons vraiment été chanceux de travailler avec Gary Holt comme producteur. Il nous a enseigné beaucoup de choses qu’on devait prendre en considération pour le prochain enregistrement. Nous n’avions que deux mois pour composer et seulement douze jours pour enregistrer « Waking into Nightmares ». C’est peu comparées aux années d’enregistrement quand on était encore qu’un groupe de garage et aux deux mois (plus ou moins) pour notre premier album.

Pouvez-vous nous dire quelques infos sur le nouvel opux ? Êtes-vous déjà en train de travailler dessus ?

John: Pas encore, trop de concerts pour le moment ; nous n’avons jamais le temps de répéter ou de s’entrainer seul ou en groupe. Nous consacrons beaucoup de temps à trouver des riffs, à échanger nos idées sur des chansons et à programmer la musique sur nos ordinateurs. Nous nous donnons pour objectif de prendre au moins la dernière moitié de l’année pour donner au troisième album le temps de prendre forme. Nous ne voulons pas y aller à la barbare comme pour le deuxième album. Cette fois nous passerons au moins six mois à écrire et enregistrer l’album pour une éventuelle sortie d’ici l’été 2011.

Pouvons-nous espérer voir Warbringer participer à des festivals européens pour l’été ? Comme le Graspop, le Summer Breeze, le Hellfest…

John: Nous avons fait le Graspop l’année dernière avec Full Force ainsi que bon nombre de bons festivals. Cette année nous avons le Headbangers Open Air and Obscene Extreme de prévu donc nous serons de retour en Europe qu’en été mais nous avons beaucoup de dates que nous n’avons pas encore confirmé. Nous essayons de participer à plus de festivals dont plusieurs auxquels ont a encore jamais participé mais qui nous tenteraient comme le Hellfest, le Bang Your Head, le Party-San, le Summer Breeze, Bloodstock, Gods of Metal, le Download, Rock Hard…

Les gars, que voudriez-vous dire aux gens qui lisent cette interview pour leur faire bouger leur cul et venir vous voir en concert ?

John: Bougez votre cul par ici et ramenez des potes, buvez de la bonne boisson aromatisée à l’alcool, pogotez et venez faire les fous ! Nous passons toujours un bon moment avec les groupes avec qui nous tournons pour donner au public le meilleur de nous même qu’il y ait 50 ou 2000 personnes.

Une anecdote comique, une histoire marrante par rapport à ta vie sur la route que veuilles bien partager avec nous ?

John: C’est l’histoire d’un Finlandais qui n’arrêtait pas de me coller que j’ai rencontré à San Diego.
Ce type m’a dit qu’il allait nous voir à Mexico demain mais il était tellement bourré que je croyais qu’il me disait des conneries jusqu’à ce que je le voie descendre en taxi le lendemain à Mexico. Donc nous avons joué avec Overkill et je pense qu’il s’est enfilé six shooters de tequila minimum parce que la seconde fois où je l’ai vu il était étalé comme une merde dans le caniveau de notre parking. Après s’être concertés, on a décidé de la ramener dans notre caravane car il semblait trop déchiré pour gerber. Nous avons pris son passeport pour qu’il puisse passer la frontière avec nous. Après quatre heures de route, à la frontière, au moment où les douaniers s’avançaient vers nous le type s’est mit à courir comme un malade. Quelqu’un à ouvert la porte pensant qu’il allait gerber et il est tombé en s’explosant la tête contre un rail en sortant. On s’est tous ramené vers lui et y’avait du sang plein le ciment. Nous nous sommes démerdés pour l’emmener à un hôpital américain. Une semaine plus tard il nous a envoyé un email nous disant qu’il a passé un super moment.
