VERSION ANGLAISE
Hello Ronny, and thank you for accepting to do this interview with The Rocker's Place. First of all, can you tell us what Trail of Tears is all about for you?Ronny: It is a channel of self-expression and a forum which enables me to stay sane (most of the time at least). Trail of Tears is naturally a big part of my life and takes up most of my time. After all, I have spent more than half my life living with this monster.
Trail of Tears has a very unique style by mixing tenor, death growls, with soprano passages. What are your principal influences?Ronny: Quality is the main influence, it's as simple as that. We listen to all kinds of music as long as it has substance and portrays genuine emotions. Those elements can be found in all kinds of music if you only dare to look for it. There are people who are very stubborn and insist on staying with one type of music and refuse to broaden their horizon and it is incredible how much good music they are missing out on by doing so. The number one rule in Trail is that we always use the vocal style which adds something to the music rather than just filling a hole, we have never been a 50/50 band when it comes to sharing the vocals. If a song sounds better with only female vocals or only extreme vocals then that is what we are going to use. We don`t think that much about it when composing the music, it is always the good song that is the key element and then we figure out the vocals after that.
How should you describe your last album named "Bloodstained Endurance"? Ronny: Well, it's almost a year since the album was released and I`m already well into the process of the next album so it`s kind of difficult to switch focus and look back but generally I think Bloodstained is a melting pot of all our previous albums and a progression both in performance, production and song-writing. We had a pretty clear idea of what we wanted and the album is still very personal and special for me.
What is the song that sounds the best live from that last release? Or also the one that you prefer to perform? All the songs I heard at the Belgium show were awesome, like The Feverish Alliance or In The Valley Of Ashes. Ronny: In The Valley of Ashes is an extremely personal song and every time I`m able to perform it while still maintaining control over my feelings is somewhat of a personal victory. So regardless of how painful that song is, it is still an overwhelming feeling everytime we perform it. I also really like to play Once Kissed by the Serpent....as it holds such insane rage and hatred, always makes for a cleansing and satisfying live performance.
How should you explain the band's evolution on their discography?Ronny: I think this is such a huge topic that I don`t even know where to start. The band has existed for over 13 years and as all bands with such a track record I guess it`s safe to say that we have had both our ups and downs and made both smart and not so smart decisions over the years.
What is the thing that you love the most about touring around the world with Trail of Tears?Ronny: I just love the touring life in general! The performance part is of course the main reason why you are on tour in the first place but I`m really drawned to the whole thing. To be the last person awake at night and sitting with a beer on the tour bus looking out as the world passes by. It`s romantic. I love it. Not to mention all the amazing people you get to meet. Some of my best friends are people that I met on tour and as a result of it I have friends all over the world, it`s pretty fantastic.
Did you enjoy your last gig in Belgium, at La Mare Aux Diables? There was some people of our website, and we really had a good time. Ronny: I`m really happy that you had a nice evening out! I remember the venue to be kind of weird and the location even weirder hehe...it was kinda in the middle of nowhere and my initial reaction was that this will be a disaster but it turned out very ok I think and the audience seemed to appreciate all the bands and we managed to have fun too so in other words, everything how they should be!
How was touring accross Europe with Gothminister and Magenta in the end of 2009?
Ronny: It was a lot of fun, great people all over the line! We had played with Gothminister before and knew the guys pretty well, also Magenta turned out to be really nice people and I think the tour package was an attractive one that should have gotten some more promotion. The turn-outs were not bad but definitely had the potential to be better.
Can we expect a new tour with some dates in France and/or Belgium in 2010?
Ronny: A new tour is not likely in 2010, festivals or one-offs/short tours could be possible but the main focus after the summer festivals are over will be the new album. We are in pre-production mode at the moment and will start to record the next album in September this year so that will take most of the focus but I can already tell you that 2011 will be a busy touring year, wait and see.
I saw that Trail of Tears will be a part of Metal Camp's bill next summer. Will you play other european festivals? What is the festival you should really love to be a part of?
Ronny: Yeah, finally Metal Camp. About time hehe...we are doing some festivals this summer like Brutal Assault in Czech Republic which has its 15 year anniversary this year, the line-up is sick and I`m really looking forward to it! Another cool thing would be the Pro Rock Open Air in Ukraine, a country which we have yet to play so that should be a lot of fun! There are some other festivals also this year that we have to wait to announce so it will be a cool summer. As for festivals we WANT to play, I guess we are more like, "the more, the better" kind of band hehe...of course we would like to play as many of the big festivals as possible, like Wacken, we played Wacken in 2001 so next year it will be 10 years. Might be a nice occasion! Download, Graspop etc, there are more than enough attractive festivals around.
Last question; what are, in your opinion, the best bands of the metal stage today?
Ronny: There are too many bands to mention here and not only metal of course. I listen to so much music and so many bands it`s kind of hard to keep up with myself sometimes haha! For a little selection of what I like, check out my Myspace profile: www.myspace.com/ronnythorsen
Thank you very much for answering all of these questions. Now to end this interview, I let you say the final words to our readers!
Ronny: Thanks for the support everyone! Keep your eyes and ears open and check out www.trailoftears.no and www.myspace.com/trailoftearsmetal
VERSION FRANCAISE
In The Valley Of Ashes.
