[Interview] Arma Gathas

Voici une interview d'Arma Gathas que j'ai réalisée aujourd'hui même. C'est Simon Fuellemann, guitariste du groupe qui y a répondu. Il y a d'abord la version originale en anglais et puis la version française, traduite par mes soins. Je vous souhaite une bonne lecture, et n'hésitez en aucun cas à commenter.

Hello Arma Gathas and thank you very much for accepting to do this interview with The Rocker's Place. First of all, can you tell us what the band is all about for you?

Simon: It’s a dream come true after so many years playing in different bands. With Che on vocals, Marc on Guitar as well as Alex on Bass and Max on drums. Especially Che and me always wanted to be in a band together – for year. We have been discussing this since, I guess, 2000 or so. Now it finally happened. And with other friends for years in the band it just felt like the right thing to do and continue.

What does Arma Gathas mean? Why did you choose this name?

Simon: It basically means Armed Hyms. It s a combined thing between 2 old ancient languages.
We chose it because it is what we stand for and it is a name you can play Metal, Hardcore, Industrial, you name it and it still fits. We wanted to be openminded, also with the band name.

How should you describe your album « Dead To This World »?

Simon: An honest album of Songs that have been written by me and never have been release so far with very personal lyrics by Che.
It’s a brutal concept album which rather wants to be heard as one piece than pick out some songs.
It s also our 1st record of that concept. More to come.

After just a few months and one album out, you already have a spot at the Hellfest in France. How can you explain that to us?

Simon: We have been pretty busy playing after the album release, got good reviews and didn’t sell that bad . So festivals became interested. There is more festival we will announce soon, also in Belgium! Exciting!
And of course we are all playing in bands for years and years, work in the industry. That helps too. But you know, if the band sucks you don’t get anywhere doesn’t matter who you are!

Some people are saying that you are like an european Hatebreed; are you glad about it or do you see some kind of competition in it?

Simon: I take it as a compliment even though we sound totally different. Also the vocals are different. Che used to sing different in Born From Pain which is more Hatebreed than Arma Gathas in my eyes. Overall I take it as a compliment but beg to differ. It sounds like Arma Gathas, nothing else. For example Hatebreed never uses the beats we do, never had 2 instumentals on their record, never did solos really, etc….

Arma Gathas is somehow like a dream team of Hardcore; what's the difference with Born From Pain and Cataract?

Simon: Thank you to say that! Big compliment to me! Well, we write songs different, sing different, have solos, instrumentals, have a different look, the layout is our own., different style and Che writes different and expecially his own lyrics. Of course with me as the main songwriter for years in Cataract and Che as the Singer of BfP for years you feel it like a mix of both in some aspects but that is good. Character we call it.

Besides being a part of the Hellfest, you also have been confirmed in other festivals like Ieperfest in Belgium and With Full Force in Germany. Can we expect to see other confirmations for other festivals like Graspop, Summer Breeze, etc?

Simon: Yes! We are so excited and honored. There will be some others we will announce the coming weeks. Cant name them right now. You will have to check our site and news from time to time! We are very lucky and happy to be part of quite some really cool festivals!

While talking about live shows; if you could choose to play a gig with one band, any band, which one would you choose?

Simon: Tough one honestly. I have so many bands I really like to play with. Here is a few, achievable and some not really achievable: Hatebreed, Hail of Bullets, Rammstein, Machine Head, Slayer or Metallica.

Last question but not least... what is your favorite beer?

Simon: Good one! I don’t drink! Haha.

Bonjour Arma Gathas et merci beaucoup d'accepter de faire cette interview pour The Rocker's Place. Premièrement, pouvez-vous nous dire ce que représente le groupe pour vous ?

Simon: C'est un rêve qui devient réalité après tant d'années à voir joué dans différents groupes. Avec Che au micro, Marc à la guitare ainsi qu'Alex à la basse et Max à la batterie. C'est surtout Che et moi qui avons toujours voulu être dans un groupe ensemble – depuis des années. Nous en discutions depuis 2000 je crois, ou par là. Maintenant ça arrive enfin. Et avec d'autres amis depuis des années aussi dans le groupe ça a juste l'air d'être la bonne chose à faire et à continuer.

Que signifie Arma Gathas ? Pourquoi avoir choisi ce nom ?

Simon: Ca signifie “Armed Hyms”. C'est un truc combiné entre 2 langues anciennes.
Nous l'avons choisi car c'est ce que nous sommes et c'est un nom avec lequel on peut faire du Metal, Hardcore, Industrial, tu le nommes et ça colle toujours. Nous voulons être ouverts d'esprits, aussi bien avec le nom du groupe.

Comment décririez-vous votre album « Dead To This World » ?

Simon: Un album honnête de chansons qui ont été écrites par moi et qui n'avaient pas été sorties jusque là avec des lyrics très personnels par Che.
C'est un album au concept brutal qu'il vaut mieux écouter tel quel plutôt que d'en tirer quelques titres ici et là.
C'est également notre premier album sur ce concept. Plus à venir.

Après juste quelques mois et un album sorti, vous vous faites déjà une place au Hellfest en France. Comment pouvez-vous nous expliquer ça ?

Simon: Nous avons été assez occupés à jouer après la sortie de l'album, avons reçus de bons avis et n'avons pas si mal vendus que ça . Donc les festivals sont devenus intéressés. Il y a plus de festivals que nous allons annoncer bientôt, aussi en Belgique ! C'est excitant !
Et bien sûr nous avons tous joués dans des groupes depuis des années et des années, travaillant dans l'industrie. Ca aide aussi. Mais tu sais, si le groupe craint tu n'auras rien nul part peu importe qui vous êtes !

Certaines personnes disent que vous êtes comme un Hatebreed européen; en êtes-vous fier ou y voyez-vous une forme de compétition ?

Simon: Je le prends comme un compliment même si nous sonnons différemment. La voix est aussi différente. Che chantait différemment dans Born From Pain ce qui était plus Hatebreed qu'Arma Gathas à mes yeux. De manière générale je le prends comme un compliment mais préfère nier. Ca sonne comme Arma Gathas, et rien d'autre. Par exemple Hatebreed n'utilise jamais les beats que nous utilisons, n'ont jamais eu 2 instumentals sur leur albums, n'ont jamais vraiment faits de solos, etc….

Arma Gathas est quelque part une dream team du Hardcore; quelle est la différence avec Born From Pain et Cataract ?

Simon: Merci de dire ça ! C'est un grand compliment pour moi ! Et bien, nous écrivons des chansons différentes, chantons différemment, avons des solos, des instrumentals, avons un look différent, la mise en page est la notre, le style est différent et Che écrit différement et surtout ses propres lyrics. Bien sûr avec moi ayant été depuis des années le principal “songwriter” de Cataract et Che le chanteur de BfP depuis des années vous sentez ça comme étant un mixe des deux dans certains aspects mais c'est bon.

A côté de faire parti de l'affiche du Hellfest, vous avez aussi été confirmés dans d'autres festivals comme l'Ieperfest en Belgique et le With Full Force en Allemagne. Pouvous-nous nous attendre à voir d'autres confirmations pour d'autres festivals comme le Graspop, le Summer Breeze, etc ?

Simon: Oui ! Nous sommes si excités et honorés. Il y en aura quelques autres que nous annoncerons dans les prochaines semaines. On ne peut pas les citer maintenant. Vous devrez visiter notre site et voir les news de temps en temps ! Nous sommes très chanceux et heureux d'être de l'affiche de certains festivals vraiment cool !

Tant que nous parlons de concerts; si vous pouviez choisir d'en faire avec un groupe, n'importe lequel, lequel choisiriez-vous ?

Simon: Franchement c'est difficile. Il y a tellement de groupes avec lesquels j'aimerais jouer. En voilà une partie, réalisables et certains moins réalisables: Hatebreed, Hail of Bullets, Rammstein, Machine Head, Slayer ou Metallica.

Dernière question mais non la moindre... quelle est votre bière préférée ?

Simon: Bonne question ! Je ne bois pas ! Haha.
